What is "AROMATHERAPY" & How it works?

Hi Friends
I know that all of you have experienced that whenever you are walking through a fragrant garden or even smells any fragrant flowers & herbs, suddenly your mood get uplifted & you become more energized.

But have you ever thought that,

Why it is happening that just by smelling certain flowers & herbs you start feeling better?
It is happening, because you are not just smelling fragrant flowers & herbs, actually by virtue of smelling those aromatic flowers & herbs you are having a very gentle but yet very effective medicinal therapy called “Aromatherapy”.

Yes, it’s true!

“Aromatherapy” is a very powerful complementary medicinal therapy in which fragrant flowers, herbs, plants and, extracts are used in the form of oils for the healing purpose.

“Aromatherapy” is getting very popular today because firstly it is so easy to practice so you can avail it even while walking through a fragrant flower garden. Furthermore, it is extremely effective & readily available as well.

Now question arises

Why “AROMATHERAPY” is so effective, by virtue of which it is called as an extremely powerful complementary medicinal therapy?

But before reaching to the answer of this question
Let’s first investigate

What is “Aromatherapy” and where it comes from?

Basically “AROMATHERAPY” is a holistic science and art of healing common ailments by virtue of natural essential oils. It is truly one of the oldest methods of holistic healing. The roots of this holistic therapy can be drawn back to the early Egyptian empire 5,000 years ago. They used the method of infusion to extract the oils from aromatic flowers, herbs, and plants, which were used for cosmetic and medicinal purposes.
In ancient Ayurveda as well “AROMATHERAPY” has been used for many centuries as an extremely important part of treatment.
Although “AROMATHERAPY” has been exercised for thousands of years but it has found its expression again after the 19th century when scientists of Europe & Great Britain began their research on effects of essential oils on humans.
French chemist Rene Maurice Gattefosse first discovered the healing power of Lavender essential oil after when his hand accidentally burnt in the laboratory, after that in the year 1937 he wrote a book on the anti-microbial effects of the essential oils and, from there the term ”AROMATHERAPY” emerged.

In today’s scenario because of a manifestation to a holistic lifestyle, retracing the importance of including the body, mind and, spirit to achieve optimum health and wellness “AROMATHERAPY” is gaining its popularity again.

In the present world, various scientific researches have been done and, various are in progress which shows not only the emotional but the various physical benefits that “AROMATHERAPY” and essential oils offer.

Now question arises

How “AROMATHERAPY” works?

“AROMATHERAPY” is basically an art of using essential oils for the healing purpose via massage or direct inhalation.
How aromatherapy works
How "AROMATHERAPY" works
We can also say that Essential oils (which are the intensely concentrated essences of aromatic flowers, herbs, and plants and, have magical curative property which has an immediate on our sense of smell) are the essence and basis of “AROMATHERAPY”.

“AROMATHERAPY” can be exercised via essential oils with the following two prominent ways:

*
Via Direct Inhalation of Essential oils
*
Via Massage with the essential oils

Here two questions arise that

1. What happens when we inhale essential oils?

Although Essential oils comprise of extremely complex mixtures of compounds and contain numerous components in variable concentrations, but the fundamental components of essential oils are aromatic compounds by virtue of these aromatic compounds essential oils have an immediate impact on our sense of smell called OLFACTION.

Just by inhaling the essential oils, olfactory receptor (also called odorant receptors: which are responsible for the detection of compound that has an order/fragrance) cells get stimulated and a pulse is transmitted to the emotional center of our brain called “LIMBIC SYSTEM.”

The “LIMBIC SYSTEM” is that part of our brain which is directly connected to areas of the brain linked to the breathing, memory, endocrine gland (regulates hormone levels in our body) and, blood circulation.

According to the study published in the national center of biotechnology information (NCBI), essential oils have been reported to possess strong antioxidant properties and can be effectively used in free radicals induced disorders including neurological diseases and aging.

2. What happens when we do massage with essential oils?

When we do massage with essential oils or apply them to the skin. Then these essential oils not just inhaled, but are also absorbed by the skin where they penetrate the tissues and, find their way to the bloodstream and, further transported to the other organs for healing purpose.

Studies have also shown that Essential oils and their components are rapidly absorbed through the skin and are noticeable in plasma after topical application.
Therefore it shows that topical application of essential oils represents an effective method to directly deliver a natural, anti-inflammatory agent to the area of inflammation.

The bottom line for “Essential oils”:

Because essential oils comprise of extremely complex mixtures of compounds and contain numerous components in variable concentrations. That’s why every essential oil has its own unique chemical and healing properties.

These properties (fragrance & effect) of the particular essential oil determine its stimulation and rate of absorption.

Depending upon these properties (fragrance & effect) essential oils are generally described by their “NOTE” and, classified into three categories:

1. Top NOTEs:
Strongly scented, most stimulating & uplifting essential oils but their fragrance last only for Approx. 3-24 hours;(e.g. peppermint, Basil & Bergamot)
2. Middle NOTEs:
Moderately scented, affect the body functions & metabolism and their fragrance lasts for 2-3 days;(e.g. Chamomile, Geranium & Lavender)
3. Base NOTEs:
sweet soothing scent, have a comforting & relaxing effect on the body and their fragrance lasts for up to one week;(e.g. Sandalwood, Frankincense & Jasmine)

Conclusion:

From the above discussion, we can conclude that “AROMATHERAPY” is truly an art of holistic approach to healing & well-being. Essential oils being an essence of “AROMATHERAPY” have an immediate impact on the human body, which is scientifically proven and, last but not the least “AROMATHERAPY” is also very easy to exercise.
So incorporate this ancient holistic and scientific
approach of healing and human well-being.
